Isn’t dal just the ultimate comfort food for almost every Indian? We may drool over pastas, pizzas and dimsums for a few days but eventually we do need our bowl of dal chawal to soothe us from time to time. Comforting, quick, easy, light on the tummy and wholesome, what isn’t there to not cherish the humble dal? It is replete with nutrition and without it, a typical Indian thali is always incomplete. And then there are so many options and ways to cook it. Besides the traditional dal, you can add it to khichdi, sambar, parathas and what not.

Moong dal may rule the spread in most homes, but the simple urad dal (split black gram) too is a personal favourite of many. Not only does it balance health and taste well, it is also super easy to cook at home no matter how tired or lazy you might feel. It is incredibly nutritious, brimming with protein and carbs, urad dal is also known to improve digestion, heart health, bone health, skin health and managing diabetes among others.

And while you can always stuff the dal in dosa or parathas, there’s nothing quite like a simple dal paired rice or roti. And if you too are someone who loves a comfy dal at the end of a tiring day, we have a quick and easy urad dal recipe for you to try at home. The best part about dal is you can cook it in less than an hour, with simple ingredients.

All you need to do is soak urad dal for about 30 minutes, pressure cook it with turmeric powder, salt and ginger along with some water, top it with sizzling tadka and voila! A delicious bowl of urad dal is ready to comfort you. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
