Recently people have started using krill oil instead of fish oil. Just like fish oil, krill oil supplements are also the source of omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA. Fish oil, as the name suggests, comes from the fish tissue and is a solution of fatty acids. 

It is usually extracted from oily fish, such as herring, salmon, cod, tuna, and mackerel. While krill oil is extracted from the bodies of small shrimp-like shells which is Antarctic krill. 

Difference between fish oil and krill oil

  • Krill oil has omega-3 fatty acids which are more accessible to your body and you get additional nutrients from it. 
  • Fish oil is generally cheaper than krill oil, but it's important to note that the Omega-3 fatty acids in krill have better bioavailability, so they can be absorbed more easily by your body than fish oil. 
  • The side effects of krill oil and fish oil are more or less common, which include loss of appetite, heartburn, coughing, diarrhea, nausea, and bloating.

Which one’s better?

The winner is Krill oil because of its sustainability. In simple words, the smaller amounts of DHA and EPA in krill oil can be absorbed better than the larger amounts listed in fish oil. But for someone who is allergic to shellfish should stick to fish oil for a better option.
